Bruce Allen Poe, U.S. Army Retired First Sergeant, age 77, of Siler City, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
Born on August 29, 1949, in Chatham County, North Carolina, Bruce was the son of the late Edgar Allen Poe and Daisy Louise Poe. A proud veteran, devoted family man, and loyal friend, Bruce lived a life defined by service, sacrifice, and unwavering love for those around him.
Bruce honorably served his country, over 24 years in the United States Army, retiring with the rank of First Sergeant after a distinguished military career. As a Vietnam War Veteran, he served with pride and dedication, earning numerous medals and commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge, and Master Aircraft Crewman Badge, among many other honors.
Throughout his military service, Bruce was stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska; Fort Richardson, Alaska; Fort Eustis, Virginia; Fort Meade, Maryland; and Katterbach, Germany. He was deeply proud of his years in uniform and considered serving his country one of the greatest privileges of his life. After retirement he went to work with Carolina Crane until 2019 he made tons of memories there.
A lifelong resident at heart of Siler City, Bruce attended Jordan-Matthews High School and never forgot his roots. Though his military career took him around the world, home and family remained at the center of his life.
Those who knew Bruce will remember his strength of character, and his willingness to help anyone in need. A man of his word, Bruce was someone people could depend upon, whether for advice, encouragement, or simply a helping hand. His kindness and generosity touched countless lives.
More than any accomplishment or recognition, Bruce treasured the time spent with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, soldier, and friend. The memories he created with those he loved will be carried forward for generations to come. The shoes he leaves behind can never be filled, for he was truly one of a kind.
Bruce had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Some of his happiest moments were spent taking his children and grandchildren on hunting and camping adventures, creating memories that will forever be cherished. His granddaughters each shared a special bond with him. Taylor will fondly remember the many spirited UNO tournaments they played together, while Caitlyn will treasure the countless hours spent watching videos on his phone by his side. Ashleigh memories were the stories and memories he shared with her on car rides as well as listening to 60's music. Bruce also had a special love for his dogs, who brought him much joy and companionship throughout the years.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Mary LaVern Poe; daughter, April C. Gainey and husband, Bryan W. Gainey; son, Kenneth E. Poe; granddaughters, Ashleigh N. Gainey, Taylor D. Gainey, and Caitlyn M. Gainey; sister, Cynthia Ferguson and husband, Murphy Ferguson; nephews, Baron Ferguson, Nick Ferguson, Ethan Ferguson, and Brett Justice; niece, Crystal Justice; along with many extended family members, friends, and fellow veterans who will miss him dearly.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Laurels of Chatham, Liberty Home Health, and Compass of Mebane for the compassionate care shown to Bruce during his illness.
