Mattie “Patsy” Wood Hancock, 91, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina, surrounded by her two daughters. She was born on January 26, 1934, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, to the late Mattie McFalls Wood and Jerry Burton Wood, Sr.
Patsy attended Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina, and later married her high school sweetheart, Jack Hancock. Together they made their home in Siler City, North Carolina, where they built a life rooted in love and family. In her earlier years, Patsy worked as a bookkeeper, but she spent most of her adult life as a homemaker—a role that brought her the greatest contentment.
A fabulous cook, Patsy found joy in preparing meals for those she loved. She was a devoted lover of all animals and took great pleasure in planting flowers in her yard. One of her quiet joys was watching birds flutter and fly, and over the years she lovingly kept many birdhouses, delighting in their presence. Patsy had a gentle, soft smile and her bright blue eyes could light up a room, reflecting the warmth and kindness she shared so freely.
Patsy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack R. Hancock; her parents, Mattie M. Wood and Jerry B. Wood, Sr.; and her brother, Jerry B. Wood, Jr.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Hancock Summer and her husband, Tom, of Gastonia, North Carolina, and Celia Hancock Tuten and her husband, Walt, of Greensboro, North Carolina; her granddaughter, Brittany Summer Gregory and her husband, Matt, of New Canaan, Connecticut; her grandson, Thomas Carlyle Summer of Gastonia, North Carolina; and her great-grandsons, Jack Gregory and Will Gregory, both of New Canaan, Connecticut.
Her greatest delight was time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and she treasured every visit with them.
Our heartfelt gratitude is extended to the many care givers who lovingly provided care for Patsy in her home and to the entire staff at Whitestone Retirement Community in Greensboro, North Carolina. We will be forever grateful for the nursing care, nurturing, joy, companionship, and love that were so generously given.
