Hazel Marie Newby Horton, 82, of Siler City, went to her Heavenly home on Thursday, May 28th, 2026, at her home surrounded by family.

Hazel was born in Chatham County on February 18th, 1944, to the late Thomas and Willia Headen Newby. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57 years, James Edward Horton; her brothers, Ray Newby and Terry Newby; and her sister, Janice Lee.

Miss Hazel was a wonderful homemaker and a great cook. She was known for her chicken and dumplings, sausage gravy, and pound cake. She was always positive and encouraging to everyone. She was a devoted wife and mother. She used to work for Glendale Hosiery, she worked as a CNA, and she worked in the cafeteria at Jordan Matthews High School. She was a member of Wesley Chapel Christian Fellowship Church where she was also the trustee.

Left to cherish Miss Hazel’s memory is her son Chris Horton (Keith Olson) of Portsmouth, VA; her daughter, Angela H. Sheffield (Gary) of Siler City; her sister, Marsha Newby; her brothers, Milton Newby and Henry Newby; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

A visitation will be held at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, June 4th, 2026, from 6-8 pm. The family requests all cards and flowers to be delivered to Smith & Buckner Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, June 13th, 2026, at 11 am, at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home Chapel. 

Smith & Buckner Funeral Home will be assisting the Horton family.
