Mary Runell Martin

Mrs. Mary Runell Thompson Martin, age 90, of Royston, GA, formerly of Siler City, NC, passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at Bentley’s Assisted Living in Jefferson, GA. Born March 8, 1926 in Pine Hill, North Carolina, she was the oldest of seven children born to the late Lindzie and Nellie Thompson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, James (Jim) Chalmer Martin; a brother Hannis L. Thompson; and a sister Virginia Cashion. She was a retired bookkeeper with the A&P and a former member of Siler City Pentecostal Holiness Church and a charter member of Faith Assembly of God in Siler City. IN 1993 she moved to Royston, Georgia and was an active member of the Franklin Springs Pentecostal Holiness Church where she was a member of the Women’s Ministry and the Thursday morning prayer group. She was a member of the Woodmen of World and an officer in the local lodge. She also served as a Pink Lady with Ty Cobb Memorial Hospital. She was a loyal supporter of Emmanuel College and vocal follower of the Emmanuel College Lady Lions and Lions basketball teams. Survivors include her son, James (Jim) Chalmer Martin II of Mars Hill, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Mike Bona of Franklin Springs, GA; grandsons and their spouses, James Chalmer Martin III of Waynesville, NC, Erick Martin Bona and Lisa of Lawrenceville, GA, Kyle David Bona and Krystle of Royston, GA; Great-granddaughter, Mary Mackenzie Bona of Lawrenceville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margie and Ray Rook of Lilburn, GA, Edna McCaskill of Candor, NC, Marie Turner of Climax, NC, Pat and Wayland Loftin of Martinsville, VA; brother-in-law, Lloyd (Jr.) Cashion of Sanford, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Local visitation with family will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 7pm-8pm at Whitlock Mortuary in Toccoa. Mary will be returned to Siler City, NC and the family will receive friends at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home on Thursday, August 18, 2016 from 10am–11am. Funeral services will be held at 11am Thursday, August 18, 2016 at the Chapel of Smith and Buckner Funeral Home. The Rev. Harrison Lampley and the Rev. Levy Moore will officiate. Interment will follow at Chatham Memorial Park in Siler City, NC. Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements. Smith and Buckner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements in Siler City, NC.
